God offers us a convicting piece of wisdom today. Scripture readily calls us to love others and also to serve the poor. This proverb points especially to our underlying thoughts about the poor. When someone is poor, what do we think first? Do we imagine how they are likely responsible? Is it primarily laziness? Kentucky has one of the highest poverty rates in the US. Does that mean it also has one of the highest rates of laziness? Listen to the lesson, and tell us your thoughts below.
The poor are despised even by their neighbors,
while the rich have many “friends.”
It is a sin to belittle one’s neighbor;
blessed are those who help the poor.
– Proverbs 14:20-21
